Graduate Nursing - Admissions

Criteria for regular admission as a master's degree candidate in the Department of Graduate Studies in Nursing are as follows:

• B.S. Degree with an upper division nursing major from a nationally accredited program.

• Undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

• R.N. licensure: All nursing students and faculty must have unencumbered licenses in all states and countries in which they have been previously and currently licensed. All students and faculty must provide license verification for all states and countries in which licenses have been held. Students must be licensed in the state where they are completing practicum expereinces.

• Evidence of personal and professional qualifications from three persons familiar with the applicant's academic ability, work experience, professional nursing contributions and potential to achieve in graduate school.

• Compliance with criminal background check procedures.

• Original transcript from baccalaureate granting institution. (A minimum of 30 credits must be completed through degree granting institution.)

• Personal statement of goals for graduate study and vision for advanced practice nursing

• At least one year of professional practice as a Registered Nurse

• Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL), if English is not applicant's first language

• Health Clearance for all applicants to Primary Care programs (Tuberculosis screening, Rubella titer, Hepatitis B vaccination

• Students must have at least one year of professional practice. Students applying for admission to the Primary Care Program must have 500 hours of direct contact and/or care for patients
within the year prior to admission. Students applying for admission to the Nursing Administration or Nursing Education majors must have 1000 hours of direct contact and/or care for patients within the three years prior to admission.

Provisional Admission
Applicants who do not meet all requirements for regular admission who wish to pursue work toward a master's degree at Indiana Wesleyan University while completing these requirements may be granted provisional admission permitting them to enroll in a maximum of 9 hours of non-clinical courses. Waivers will be considered on an individual basis. Regular admission may be granted to students on conditional status after they have removed deficiencies and completed no more than 9 hours of acceptable graduate work at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Unclassified Admission
Applicants who do not desire to seek a master's degree or a post-master's certificate may enroll in graduate nursing courses as unclassified students. There is a separate short application from for unclassified acceptance. Unclassified students must complete and submit the application required for Full Acceptance if they intend to enroll in the master's degree or post-master's certificate program. All criteria for full acceptance must be met before an unclassified student can be granted full acceptance. Credit earned, as an unclassified student is limited to 9 credit hours and may be applied toward a graduate degree only after evaluation and recommendation by the Graduate Faculty.
